How big are the waves at Palm Beach? ›

Most of the time south Florida is filled with choppy wind swell, but it does not stop anyone from going out and surfing and having fun. The biggest misconception is that there is only surf during hurricane season and well that cannot be further from the truth.

Because the shoreline to the south of Palm Beach Inlet faces somewhat southeast, sideshore N winds that blow across the Inlet have little effect on the lefts at Lake Worth. In general this beach is very well maintained and a great place for medium to high level surfers.

Palm Beach County offers many great surf spots with fun waves and good surf breaks. The top surf spots in Palm Beach include the Juno Beach Pier, Marcinski, Coral Cove Park, and Hobe Sound Beach, which are popular with longboarders and shortboarders.

Sited alongside stunning, high dollar real estate, Palm Beach's Reef Road is one of the few places in the state where the surf can achieve true "big wave" status, maxing out at 15 feet. It's known by many as the best surfing in Florida. Here's a guide to surfing there.

Atlantic Coast

The waters of the Atlantic Ocean on the East Coast of Florida are, in general, known to have more wave action than the Gulf Coast.

While Florida doesn't have the consistent, high-quality waves found in California and Hawaii, it has its own charm and attracts surfers looking for a different vibe and milder conditions.

While no known tsunamis have ever affected the Florida Gulf Coast, a tsunami in that location is not impossible. Additionally, while tsunamis have historically affected the Caribbean many times, it is unlikely that those tsunamis will also affect Florida.

Ninety Mile Beach is one of Australia's longest beaches, stretching for 125 kilometres. A fantastic spot for long nature walks, it's also popular for surfing.

The shoreline at Pismo Beach faces southwest and is best surfed at high tide. (In fact, under the right conditions, the waves have even been known to barrel.) Get out to the beach early in the morning to avoid the wind, which can be significant by the afternoon.

Right in Boca Raton, you can surf at the beach by Boca Raton Inlet. This fairly exposed beach and inlet leads to Boca Raton Lake and has the most favorable surf conditions during the winter. You can access the beach from South Inlet Park at 1100 S.

Not necessarily — it depends on where you plan to surf. High tides are great if you're headed towards a reef break. The only exception is if it's near a bluff, in which case the waves rarely break before hitting land. Conversely, medium to low tides are better if you're surfing near a beach break.

South Beach:

Located in Penrod Park, just east of where I-95 ends, South Beach has the potential to deliver barreling, board-breaking peaks. During north or northeast swell conditions, the A-frames are shapeliest on the incoming tide with offshore (west to northwest) winds.

The waves range from 0.5 to almost 2 metres with an average length or ride ranging from 35m to 85m depending on the wave and skill of the surfer. The average duration of a ride is 10-13 seconds.
