I tried really hard to like The Thaumaturge. The story hooks seemed interesting. The investigation mechanics were fun.
But the combat is bad and boring. And there is way too much of it for how bad, rote, and boring it is. Even the boss fights are just variations on the same turn based, sluggish and slow combat. I got through Act 1 and am just not interested enough to see it through.
Ah, that's a shame. I liked the demo, but that sounds like the exact wrong recipe, yeah
If the game had maybe a fourth of the combat it does I probably would have been able to stomach it.
The game makes a great first impression but never really grows beyond it.

the usual warnings about Ubi apply:
Police in France have taken five former Ubisoft employees, including vice president of editorial and creative services Tommy Francois and chief creative officer Serge Hascoët, into custody following a long investigation into moral and sexual harassment at the Assassin’s Creed creator. By Wednesday, the five had been taken into custody and questioned; only Francois and Hascoët’s names have been made public.
These doubts, unfortunately, did not fade away. A Better Ubisoft, a collective of employees and former employees of the studio, openly criticized the way the latest employee satisfaction survey was handled. They explain that the Ubisoft provided mostly “vague statements” and that “with the exception of participation and engagement scores, the talking points were delivered with no numbers”. A Better Ubisoft also states that the management team are “either accidentally ignorant or simply don’t want to listen” and that the collective is “tired of having to explain […] seemingly obvious points”.

From the team that brought you the Blasphemous series comes The Stone of Madness: a tactical stealth adventure game set in an 18th-century Spanish Monastery with a lovingly hand-drawn art style inspired by the work of Francisco de Goya.
Located in the Pyrenees, this time-worn Jesuit monastery is home to a madhouse and an inquisitorial prison. Five prisoners - plagued by cruel punishment, madness, and despair - pool their skills and resources to face their phobias, stave off insanity, uncover the mysteries of the Monastery, and find a way to escape.
Coming to PC (Steam and Epic), PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch Early 2025!

7 hours into Dustborn and I mostly find myself really wanting to talk to people about what choices they made in different sections. Or if there even are other choices that you could make. Especially at the gas station. Feels like an area where I only clocked one path through it, but it felt like there were strong hooks for at least one other method. Or, maybe just really good red herrings.
Game's also evoking Full Throttle quite a bit now. I am very okay with that, as well.
I am approaching what feels like the end of Chapter 2, almost all my thoughts are positive so far, including how WELL they thus far embrace the chapter/comic book structure - these are no arbitrary pauses in the story, these are EPISODES, with cold opens, self-contained arcs that tie into the grand journey, whole deal. Owns.
Haven't gotten to a gas station yet, don't want to comment too much on plot specifics until I've seen a little more of it, but I feel very optimistic about how the game's shaking out.
Are you on PC or PS5? Because my biggest complaint is that, on PS5 anyway, the game is shockingly sluggish and choppy in places. I experienced my first-ever green screen hard crash, and that it happened in a game that has thus far been 90% choose your own adventure is wild (pejorative)

That's a bummer. I'm on PC on a medium-high end system (3070 and a 12th gen i7) and it's been incredibly smooth. To the point that I had one moment of sluggishness and stuttering that lasted for like 5 seconds when it transitioned to a new location and it actually stood out because otherwise the game basically never dipped from a rock solid 60fps.
But also, yeah, I really like the comic book framing, and the whole packaging for how everything is presented. It just fits narratively and structurally and isn't just an aesthetic thing. Especially with how unique and almost self-contained each episode/issue has felt. I would absolutely believe it was originally intended to be a straight up episodic release.
You're probably just about to get to the first big fight in the game after that initial tutorial fight early on (or maybe you just finished it--it's near the end of issue 2), and once you get through that the combat definitely starts getting more fun and interesting. You get an upgrade tree to customize how you fight. It really nicely rounds out an aspect of the game that, from the demo, felt like it could have easily been a lackluster afterthought.

Just gonna shout out this great feature in the deluxe edition of Tactical Breach Wizards
Developer commentary throughout the whole game
With this enabled, you'll find tape recorders lying around the levels. Pick one up and listen to us discussing the thinking behind the level you're playing, the character your controlling, this moment in the story, or whatever else is relevant. See the trailer for a look at this in action. There are 52 of these recordings to find, totaling over 3 hours of commentary, spread across the game's 15 hour campaign. They're a mix of designer/writer Tom Francis talking through his own thinking, and interviewing each other member of the team about their work.
We get into the reasoning behind design and story decisions, ideas we tried that didn't work out, the hardest challenges we have to solve, and get a little closer to understanding why this game took more than 6 years to make.
And when you're tired of listening to us, you can throw the tape recorder at an enemy to deal 1 knockback.
